Online ValuationTraditionally, spring is prime time for house moves, as the light nights bring out property searchers, keen to be in their new homes by summer. The pandemic changed that as high demand and stamp duty holidays made peak season year-round. There was a slow start to 2023 but that has been followed by encouraging signs, according to the Which? website, which analyses the current state of the market to ask if spring is still the best time of year to buy.

Realistic pricing and less of an imbalance between supply and demand means buyers are in a better position than they were last spring, – there are 65% more homes on the market than a year ago. Properties are still more expensive than before the pandemic, but prices have fallen from their peak. However, recent figures from the Halifax and Rightmove show a small rise in prices – suggesting that the market is picking up this spring. The number of days it takes to sell a house, increased over the past year, but has started to fall again too.
If you’re wondering whether you should you buy a house in the spring, there are pros and cons to consider. You’ll find more choice of property at popular times of year, viewing properties is a more pleasant experience and you’ll see them at their best on lighter evenings – plus the moving experience tends to be easier too. The downside is that buying during the most popular months mean there’s more competition for the best properties and you may feel rushed into a decision.
